Lavazza Releases Carbon Neutral Coffee Capsules

Lavazza have recently started promoting their advancement in creating an aluminium coffee capsule that has been measured to be carbon neutral. Time to celebrate, or is it greenwashing?

Lavazza’s new zero CO2 impact aluminium coffee capsules

After reviewing the information about how Lavazza can claim the carbon neutrality, it appears they still haven’t really addressed the full life cycle of the aluminium capsules, ensuring an end-of-life event that would be more fitting for an infinitely recyclable resource.

The Lavazza team have done an excellent job in measuring the “carbon footprint” associated with sourcing, processing, packaging, and transporting, water & energy used to make a brew. Though I am left wondering if they have missed a vital part in the carbon footprint in the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) — sustainable disposal.

It was a shocking moment to see the website (link below) displaying an image of an aluminium capsule being tossed into a general waste bin — destined for producing methane in landfill while it decomposes over 100+ years. Reading deeper into the fine print on their ‘full report’, the information about the “end-of-life” impact appears to be a bit vague. However, they do cite the biogenic methane emissions are evaluated under the “global warming indicator” — which their report only addresses the CO2 part of the carbon footprint.

Methane and Carbon Dioxide both contribute to the greenhouse gases (GHG), with methane being an alarming 25 times more potent than CO2.

This small factor is how they appear to omit the need to address the methane produced from the coffee rotting in the landfills at end-of-life.

It’s no secret that most businesses struggle to change their methods and processes to reduce their carbon footprint, wanting to achieve a greater Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Therefore Lavazza’s progress is definitely one to be commended and celebrated.

But what if you could reduce the carbon footprint one step further and provide a true sustainable end-of-life to your coffee capsules?
